Antwerp, Itinerary of a Flemish Discovery – Monday, 2 October or Friday, 6 October 2023 – Full Day
Belgium’s second largest city, Antwerp is known as being one of the largest ports in Europe which, over the centuries, became fabulously rich due to maritime commerce with distant countries, its quaysides and warehouses fully stacked with the most noble of materials and exotic products. Antwerp is also an artistic centre and the town where Peter-Paul Rubens, Jordaens, van Dijck, and others lived. In addition, since the 15th century, it has been the largest diamond centre in the world with a worldwide reputation. We propose a walking tour during which we will conjure up the golden era of this metropolis. Rubens’ House, the Rockox House, Sint Carolus-Borromeus, will be visited, and each of these buildings will speak to us of artistic and economic splendor and effervescence.

Indicative program: A stroll along the shimmering waters of the Minnewater, the silver thread of the canals, the sparkling white swans under a willow, the little white houses in the Beguinage. Here in Bruges, everything is poetry, romance, and undefinable melancholy. We have the pleasure of inviting you to join us for a guided tour in a Bruges that few visitors take the time to discover: the city of the Hanseatic merchants. With our guide, we will conjure up the boats and carriages bringing German or Italian merchants to sell spices from the Orient, wines from the Rhine, furs from Russia. In the bustle of the docks, we will find an atmosphere as cosmopolitan as the 16th century city: the largest port in the world! From the chapels to the busy docks, from the mansions to the great churches, we will follow the trace of those who made Bruges great.
